What is Lewy Body Dementia?

What can we do about LBD?

Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is a deeply complex brain disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Named after the abnormal protein deposits, called Lewy bodies, found in the brain's nerve cells, LBD can lead to a range of cognitive, motor, and psychiatric symptoms.

Lewy Body looks like:

  • Fluctuating Cognitive Abilities: Individuals with LBD often experience variations in their cognitive abilities, such as attention, problem-solving, and memory. Often LBD suffers may swiftly shift from their normal self to a stranger in their own skin, unsure of those around them.

  • Visual Hallucinations: Visual hallucinations, where individuals see things that are not present, are a common symptom of LBD. This can include people and animals, moving through their environment, seemingly innocuously.

  • Motor Symptoms: LBD can cause movement disorders similar to Parkinson's disease, including stiffness, tremors, and impaired balance. Some LBD sufferers may find themselves struggle with depth perception and are at risk of falling.

  • Sleep Disturbances: Sleep disturbances, such as vivid dreams and REM sleep behavior disorder, are frequently observed in individuals with LBD. From simple sleep talking to more active and dangerous sleep behaviors.

  • Psychiatric Symptoms: Depression, anxiety, and apathy are common psychiatric symptoms associated with LBD.

Living with Lewy Body Dementia presents significant challenges for both individuals diagnosed and their caregivers. The fluctuating nature of symptoms and the complexity of the condition often require specialized care and support.

What can we do about LBD?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Lewy Body Dementia. While we hope this will change soon, at this time, supporting LBD sufferers and supportive charities such as the "LBDA" is the best place to start!

Through our fundraiser, we aim to raise awareness about Lewy Body Dementia and support one of the millions of families affected by this challenging condition. Your generous support will help us ensure vital resources, safety and security for a beloved local father. Any funds raised above our $20,000.00 goal will be donated directly to the LBDA to aid other sufferers of Lewy Body and their families.

Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those living with Lewy Body Dementia. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Randy was recently diagnosed with Lewy Body and forced to retire early. His home requires modification as well as installation of a new furnace to maintain his safety as he and the family journey this illness together. Community support is so important for this family, as without our help, their family home of 40 years may become an unsafe environment.
